The majority of the population lives in towns such as Clermont-Ferrand, Aurillac, Chamalières, Issoire. The countryside is very sparsely populated. The region of Auvergne enjoys a beautiful landscape of small mountains and rolling hills with green pastures that can remind the visitor of Ireland or Scottish Highlands, although with a lot more sunshine. In fact, part of Auvergne sits on the Massif central, the oldest chain of mountains and volcanos in France. The volcanoes are now extinct and provide Auvergne with a few ski resorts in Cantal and Sancy, which are becoming more popular with families.

Although the region was cut off from the rest of the country for a long time through lack of proper road infrastructure, it is no longer the case since the construction of the A71, A75 and A89 motorways. In addition, there are international airports at Clermont-Ferrand and Brive which give easier access to this tranquil region.

The region has known many important historical battles and influences from the Gauls to the Second World War. Indeed, its rich natural assets has always attracted people. The Gauls settled in this area to mine gold and silver and became very powerful. An anecdote stipulates that their king Vercingetorix stood his ground against Caesar in 52 BC. The region also enabled them to master copper work, ceramic, iron work.

Today, there are still pockets of industrial activity with large companies such as Michelin and Dunlop for tyres, Alcan for metallurgy and Limagrain for seeds. The region is also famous for its mineral waters (Volvic …), hams and cheeses (Cantal, Bleu d'Auvergne, Saint-Nectaire).

So if you're looking for a quiet place in unspoiled countryside, this is the place to look for affordable properties.
