The Languedoc-Roussillon is located along the Mediterranean coast in the South of France with Montpellier being its principal and largest city. The region covers 27,376 km2 with a growing population, currently standing at 2.6 million people.
The mild climate created by the Mediterranean and beautiful departments of Aude, Gard, Herault and Pyrenees-Orientales makes it one of the top destination for families and retirees seeking a new life in France. In fact, it also has the second highest number of second homes in France by region. However, the agreeable climate of the coast contrasts sharply with the northern department of Lozere in close proximity to the Massif Central.
The Languedoc-Roussillon retains deep roots in history with famous Roman towns such as Nimes and Narbonne, fortified towns such as Carcassonne and many Cathar castles which continuously attract large numbers of tourists and holiday makers. The name of the region reflects its origin as the language spoken in most of the region until the early 20th century was Occitan (langue d'oc). The Catalan language was also used particularly in the southern part of the region (Roussillon) which borders Spain (Catalonia) sitting just across the Pyrenees mountains.
Languedoc-Roussillon has been a large producer of wine for centuries and is actually the oldest and surprisingly to many, the largest area of wine production in France. This is one of its key industries although in recent years the supply of wine has exceeded demand. Nonetheless, the region boasts a unique cuisine and some excellent wines from the appellations of Corbieres, Fitou, Minervois etc and most offering good value for money.
This region is rightfully considered a jewel on the Mediterranean coast with a large number of fantastic properties to consider from villas with sea views to farmhouses in the valleys between the mountains.
